As the nation continues to move towards a greener future, hydrogen (H2) is stepping into the spotlight as an ideal clean energy solution. We can increase demand by lowering production costs so hydrogen will fully reach its market potential. Current plans to reduce costs include U.S. Government initiatives, including financial incentives to develop and deploy new hydrogen technologies at scale.
H2@Scale is one such initiative that was developed by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to lower H2 costs by establishing its technological and scalable viability. This collaboration between sector stakeholders will help achieve Hydrogen Energy Earthshot goals, which prioritize a target price of $1/kg H2 by 2030. Reaching cost goals across production, storage, transfer, and distribution areas will help increase public H2 use. As usage increases, the need to build infrastructure will also become necessary to enable our transition to clean energy.
The clean energy transition will also be greatly aided by liquid hydrogen (LH2). In addition to being more energy-dense than its gaseous counterpart, H2’s purity is also increased in its liquid form. Increased purity translates to higher efficiency in the machines being fueled, longer timespans between refilling, and lower maintenance costs.
One of the LH2-focused projects in the H2@Scale initiative is a DOE-selected consortium led by Shell to develop large-scale (up to 100,000 m3) LH2 storage systems for international trade applications. GenH2 is contributing to this effort by providing the CS-900 cryostat model, which is among the world’s most advanced thermal testing devices. This cryostat will assess the viability of different materials for use in these LH2 storage systems. Ensuring LH2’s longevity and energy retention will allow its price to lower while increasing its reach on a global scale.
To achieve a future powered by H2, systems of all types must provide widespread, cost-effective accessibility. With the combined industry efforts brought on by the H2@Scale initiative, the vision of affordable hydrogen will soon become a reality.
GenH2’s mission is to create light-scale infrastructure solutions for the liquid hydrogen value chain, focusing on the liquefaction and storage of H2, while accelerating widescale H2 infrastructure rollout for a cleaner brighter future.
