The Benefits of Hydrogen for Trash Trucks
The consideration of switching from fossil fuels to hydrogen power is a very straightforward decision when looking at the trash & recycling industries. While every machine running on fossil fuels has a part to play in overall carbon emission, garbage trucks are highly responsible for the carbon footprint left in our neighborhoods and cities. Worse yet, garbage trucks are rather infamous for their noise pollution, making them both harmful to the air we breathe and what we hear outside our homes. When comparing diesel to hydrogen, the benefits received from switching to the zero-emission fuel source cannot be understated.
The average garbage truck running on diesel travels 25,000 miles a year, getting a measly 3 miles to the gallon. In total, a single truck consumes 8,600 gallons of fuel annually, making it one of the least fuel-efficient vehicles possible. For comparison, the average commercial vehicle consumes only 656 gallons per year. Regarding the noise pollution emitted from garbage trucks, that can be primarily blamed on the fact that over 40% of all garbage trucks are over 10 years old, meaning their engines are often degraded and emit harmful exhaust. With that said, these trucks will need to be replaced sooner rather than later, making the switch to hydrogen that much more reasonable.
Hydrogen fuel cells are 3x more fuel-efficient than diesel, are lighter than other fuel cells, and emit enough onboard energy to remove the need for a car battery. Best of all, hydrogen is renewable and emits exhaust in the form of water vapor, making it zero-emission. Hydrogen will help garbage trucks go longer, run quieter, and completely eliminate their existing carbon footprint forever.
