Hydrogen Taking Flight
How Hydrogen will Completely Transform Aviation
The aviation industry is perhaps the most important system in the world, as it is quite literally what connects us. Earning a collective $1 Trillion annually, the industry makes up 35% of the world’s trade value, produces $850 billion in economic activity, and employs over 4 million workers worldwide. To say that it is irreplaceable would be an understatement. However, this massive industry’s aircrafts are also responsible for a considerable amount of resource consumption. Of the world’s supply of 25,368 commercial aircraft, each plane consumes 1 gallon of fuel per second, totaling 36,000 gallons in a 10-hour flight. The total combined aircraft fuel consumed every year is 95 billion gallons, followed by a subsequent 920 million tons of carbon emissions. Hydrogen power is the solution to ceasing these numbers.
Operating 3x more efficiently than diesel and producing enough onboard energy to remove the need for batteries, hydrogen has been used by NASA for decades to power their rockets. Being comprised of 70% of our atmosphere, hydrogen is thus renewable and zero-emission thanks to its exhaust being water vapor.
Hydrogen power will make planes quieter, more fuel-efficient, cleaner, and best of all, emission-free. With the technology already here, hydrogen can have an infrastructure to transform every airplane into the ultimate transportation system.
